How to Become a Gerontologist in Florida - FL

Florida has become the place to retire for Americans from the colder, northern states. The retirees, often referred to as “snow birds” will live part of the year in the warmer climate of Florida, leaving behind the harsh and cold winters of states like Illinois, Michigan and Indiana. Given that the population of older people is steadily increasing in Florida, this is a great place to discover a career in gerontology. These professionals are concerned with the well being, sociology and mental attitudes of individuals as they begin to age. There are many different ways in which you can work with training in gerontology. You may be interested in working as a dietitian (with further education), on the specialized dietary needs of an aging population. Also, if trained as a nurse, you might look to have a bachelor's degree in gerontology in order to add the geriatric nurse credential to your repertoire. Florida is a fantastic state, where the demand is expected to grow for those interested in gerontology.

Gerontology study and work can be completed on a number of levels. You can gain a certificate to work as a home health aide or within a nursing facility. You can pursue a 2 or 4 year degree leading to an associates or bachelor's degree, respectively where you can use this education to heighten your current career or help to shape decisions for lawmakers in regard to the health, safety and special concerns of the elderly. Advanced degrees such as a Master's or Doctorate can help you to make a larger impact on the elderly population group as a whole by working as gerontologist physician. Gerontology can be a rewarding career no matter what pathway you take, as long as it fits you and your desires.

Campus based and online programs, will prepare aspiring gerontologists in Miami, Tampa, St. Petersburg, Jacksonville and Orlando to secure careers at some of the best hospitals and healthcare facilities in the country including Florida Hospital in Orlando, Baptist Medical Center, Jackson Memorial Hospital, Mount Sinai Medical Center and Memorial Regional Hospital.
