How to Become a Long Term Care Administrator in Florida

There are several ways to begin long term care careers in Florida:


  • Earn a bachelor’s degree in nursing care administration from an accredited college or university. The degree must include at least sixty hours of semester coursework directly pertaining to nursing care administration. In addition, the completion of a 1,000 hour college or university internship in nursing home administration (NHA) as an administer-in-training (AIT) is also required when choosing this path.
  • Earn a bachelor’s degree in nursing care administrated from an accredited college or university. The completion of a 2,000 hour college or university sponsored internship in NHA as an AIT is required as well.
  • Possess at one year work experience in management as it relates to executive responsibilities and skills. If management experience is not in a skilled nursing facility, than completion of a 1,000 hour college or university provided internship in NHA and an AIT is also needed.
  • Requirements for an assisted living administrator include: at least twenty-one years of age, completion of an approved education program, and at least twenty-fours of patient contact within the first three months of employment.
  • Requirements for an extended congregate facility administrator include at least two years in social work, management, recreation or counseling.

After initial education is acquired, the next step for all long term care administration professionals is to take a federal and state-based competency examination. Luckily, individuals can apply for both using the same application. A score of at least 75% or better is needed on both exams in order for licensure to be granted.
