Long Term Care Training in Florida

There are six different degree programs available in Florida that will fulfill background education requirements to practice in the state. These programs are provided by three state universities found in Tallahassee, Boca Raton, and Jacksonville. These universities offer a variety of degree paths including: Bachelor of Science in Health Care Management, Bachelor of Science in Health Care Administration, Master of Science in Health Care Administration, Bachelor of Science in Health, and Master of Science in Health—Geriatric Management Program.

Although curriculum will vary slightly between educational programs within these universities, all programs prepare students to sit for state and national competency examinations. Therefore, all formal education will likely instruct on similar long term care subjects, such as: standards of nursing home health and safety, federal, state and local health and safety laws and regulations, general administration, psychology of patient care, principles of medical care, personal and social care, therapeutic and supportive care and services in LTC, departmental organization and management, communicational interrelationships and occupational terminology.

Lastly, all LTC administrators in Florida must complete continuing education related to the industry in order to maintain licensure. All nursing home administrators are required to complete at least forty hours of continuing education every two years. Within this requirement, two hours must focus on medical error prevention and one hour must pertain to HIV/AIDS. Furthermore, all assisted living administrators must complete a minimum of twelve hours of continuing education over a two year time span. Finally, all extended congregate facility administrators are expected to complete a total of six hours of continuing education every two years.

Through campus based and online programs, aspiring Long Term Care Specialists in Jacksonville, Miami, Tampa, St. Petersburg and Orlando, Florida may be able to prepare themselves for the possibility of employment in some of the largest hospitals and healthcare facilities in the state including Baptist Medical Center, Florida Hospital Orlando, Mount Sinai Medical Center, Jackson Memorial Hospital, and Memorial Regional Hospital.
