Medical Billing and Coding Education in Florida - FL

According to America’s Health Ranking, Florida ranks 36th in the nation in overall health. There are certainly some accolades including a decrease in smoking and (perhaps as a consequence) a decrease in cardiovascular disease, but there are definitely opportunities for improvements in healthcare and thus, opportunities abound for healthcare professionals in the state of Florida.

Florida already has hundreds of hospitals, including some of the nation’s top children’s hospitals, but as the state continues to be among the top retirement and relocation destinations, the need for skilled healthcare workers will only rise in the coming years. And, as medical billers and coders are often considered the glue that binds the industry together, opportunities for these positions abound.

Steps to Becoming a Medical Biller in Florida

Although the job descriptions for medical coders and billers are slightly different, the education required and organizations and requirements for certification and continuing education are similar.

One of the major benefits of choosing to pursue a Florida medical billing certificate is that program graduates have the option to work from home. At first, graduates with medical billing and coding certification in Florida are likely to have to work with a doctor’s office or a hospital but, once they have proven their proficiency, they will have the chance to work as independent contractors and set their own hours.

Still, if you enjoy the chance to work with others, you may prefer to apply for work directly with a healthcare provider. Jobs are available for both types of position on most major job boards (including careerbuilder.com and monster.com) as well as with the association that governs this career (see below).

There is currently no hard data on the number of medical billers and coders in the state of Florida as the Bureau of Labor Statistics does not break out these job descriptions from other healthcare support services jobs. However, there are major hospitals in a dozen metropolitan areas in Florida, so the need for qualified billers and coders to handle confidential medical records and financials of Florida’s patients is likely to explode in the coming years.
