Florida Medical Billing and Coding Schools - FL

Like many healthcare support careers, there are a couple different routes to becoming a medical biller or coder. Although some computer proficiency and a high school diploma are required prerequisites for most medical billing and coding programs can be started with little to know medical background

A certificate program online or through one of the Florida medical coding schools may be the best course of action for those who have little money or time to complete a more advanced degree program. These can typically be completed in about three months. These certification programs are designed to prepare students for an entry-level position in the field.

For those who are able to spend more time (and money) on this field of study, there are more than a dozen technical or community colleges in Florida that offer more advanced degree programs in medical billing/coding; many medical billing schools in Florida have a number of locations, so finding the right program for you should be very convenient. These programs, in most cases, can be completed in one to two years, depending on the level of specialization.

Typical to a career in healthcare, most of these programs begin with coursework in physiology, anatomy, and medical terminology. Next, students learn the technical aspects of billing and coding with such classes as insurance regulations, HIPAA restrictions and coding. And, though not required by some courses, many programs include internships with doctors’ offices and hospitals as part of the coursework. Medical billers and coders will likely never work directly with patients but it is critical that they be able to manage the workload and interact well with the doctors, nurses, and insurance personnel they will ultimately work with every day.

As is true with most educational programs, advanced programs through Florida medical coding schools are not required for employment but they do provide the opportunity to start at a higher salary and move more quickly through the ranks.

If neither of these options is appealing, or convenient, prospective medical billers/coders can also find an on-site program that meets their needs. Although there are no Masters programs in this field, there are a number of distance learning programs that offer Associates degrees in medical billing and coding.

Through campus based and online programs, aspiring Medical Billing and Coding Professionals in Jacksonville, Miami, Tampa, St. Petersburg and Orlando, Florida may be able to prepare themselves for the possibility of employment in some of the largest hospitals and healthcare facilities in the state including Baptist Medical Center, Florida Hospital Orlando, Mount Sinai Medical Center, Jackson Memorial Hospital, and Memorial Regional Hospital.
