The medical transcription profession is an established, important profession in allied health. You can start your own medical transcription service, work for a healthcare facility or be a freelancer and work from home. Medical transcriptionists transcribe a healthcare provider or doctor’s verbal recordings and dictation and enter the notes onto the correct form, letter, or other piece of important information. Florida, is considering requiring that medical transcriptionists write notes word for word. This is proving difficult to some, but in truth, it’s important to be sure that a doctor’s notes or other critical information is accurately transcribed.
According to the Florida Allied Health Education Careers Organization (www.flahec.org/hlthcareers) which researches allied health career possibilities in South Florida, the number of Medical Transcriptionists employed in Florida is projected to increase by 2014 to approximately 6,200 which is an annual average growth rate of 3.2 percent.
Florida Continuing Education/License Requirements for Medical Transcriptionists
Participation in continuing education activities assists certified medical transcriptionists maintain the credentials that are necessary for medical transcription with the recertification process every three years.
AHDI sends guidelines for continuing education (CE) to all CMTs with their initial certification. Guidelines, recertification procedures and creditworthy activities can be found on the AHDI website under the certification section at www.ahdionline.org.
A minimum of 30 continuing education credits (CECs) must be accomplished with 24 CECs minimum of medicolegal issues, clinical medicine, and the latest technology for medical transcription tools in the workplace. The remaining 6 required CECs may be taken in either the core areas mentioned above or optional areas of Complementary Medicine, Healthcare Industry and
Professional Development. AHDI recommends that CMTs obtain more than the minimum 30 CECs. There are a variety of Florida medical transcription schools as well as online options.
