Florida Nurse Informatics Certification - FL

Nursing informatics professionals in Florida should have a Bachelors’ of Science in Nursing. Many of the state’s employers prefer that informatics nurses have a master’s degree and an increasing number request a high level of experience with electronic medical records. Most programs involve computer science, basic nursing, and computer-oriented informatics knowledge. Basic informatics are covered in course work, and then incorporated into college level nursing education.

Some college courses in Florida may involve practical nursing experience, to better facilitate the informatics needs of the nursing field. This course work is centered on nursing-oriented data gathering, management and dissemination methods and principles. Nursing informatics students also perform college coursework to use data processing and storage software for the healthcare industry. To practice nursing informatics at an expert level, nurses need to study informatics at the master or doctoral level. A master's education is increasingly available through online as well as campus-based programs, while doctoral education usually requires on-campus study.

Informatics Licensure, Certification in Florida

Upon qualifying as a Registered Nurse and obtaining a license through the Florida Department of Health and the Board of Nursing Examiners, applicants can gain practical informatics experience, and then apply for a Florida nursing informatics certification through the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC). Applicants who have never taken and passed a nursing licensure examination must have graduated from an educational program acceptable to the Florida Board of Nursing.

To qualify for the Registered Nurse examination, applicants must be a graduate of a general nursing program for the preparation of professional nurses and submit a completed application and the required fee to the Florida Board of Nursing. Once an individual has been approved by the Board to take the National Council for Licensure Examination (NCLEX) for Registered Nurses, the applicant must register with Pearson VUE and obtain an Authorization to Test (ATT). The fee for taking the NCLEX examination is $200. Candidates may register by mail, phone or online by going to the NCLEX candidate web site located at www.pearsonvue.com/nclex.

To gain certification in nursing informatics, interested individuals must complete a course accredited by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) and pass the nursing informatics certification exam. Because nursing informatics is a relatively new field, there are many different courses, which take anything from a few days to months to complete. They are then considered to have a Florida nursing informatics certification.
