Since this field offers lucrative salaries it is natural that sonographers, also called ultrasound technicians, have many responsibilities. In Florida, ultrasound technician training is important. In general, ultrasound techs’ jobs are to use diagnostic equipment that is specific to that industry, and direct sound waves at a high frequency into various parts of people’s bodies. These images are photographed or videotaped, and then transmitted.

There is much more to sonography than simply taking pictures of women’s pregnant stomachs. There are also many specific fields that sonographers may go into, including abdominal, ophthalmic, gynecologic, and obstetric sonography, and neurosonography. Keep reading to learn about ways to get into these fields.

Florida ultrasound technician training involves a formal education and passing some tests to become certified. The exams that you will need to take are dependant upon the specific sonography field that you would like to enter.

  • For Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (RDMS), a physics exam is required, along with an exam in a specific area, which could be the abdomen, breast, gynecology and obstetrics, neurosonography, or fetal echocardiography. You will need to pass both of these exams before moving on.
  • For Registered Diagnostic Cardiac Sonographers (RDCS), that same physics exam is required, and another exam will have to be passed in one of these areas: echocardiography, pediatric echocardiography, or fetal echocardiography. You will need to pass both of these exams to receive accreditation.
  • For Registered Vascular Technologists (RVT), the physics exam is necessary, as well as a vascular technology exam. Both exams will need to be successfully completed for accreditation.
