How to Become a Gerontologist in Georgia - GA

Gerontologists are employed in many different settings, including hospitals, nursing care facilities, public service agencies, and even health insurance companies. Others work closely with professionals in other occupations in more of a consultant role—helping dietitians, occupational or physical therapists, or financial counselors, for example. The role of a gerontologist in this type of scenario is to help bring the unique needs and constraints faced by an elderly patient or client into the situation so that the client obtains the best care or counsel possible.

Some gerontologists may be certified in other occupations, especially as there is no certification for gerontology in Georgia. Regardless of their main focus, be it health service or social service, a gerontologist needs to stay apprised of various factors that affect the elderly in order to offer holistic service. One way to stay informed is to become a member of the Gerontological Society of America (GSA). This organization integrates information from several areas of study, including biology, sociology, public policy, economics, and humanities, in order to prepare and apprise its members for issues that affect the elderly.

Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta is an example of a hospital that may provide training for and be in need of the services of a gerontologist. It serves a significant population of low-income patients, many of whom are likely to be elderly.

Through campus based and online programs, aspiring gerontologists in Atlanta, Augusta, Columbus and Savannah, Georgia may be able to prepare themselves for the possibility of employment in some of the largest hospitals and healthcare facilities in the state including Atlanta Medical Center, Grady Memorial Hospital, WellStar Kennestone Hospital, and DeKalb Medical at North Decatur.
