Not all long term care professions will involve the same educational path, as there are all sorts of career possibilities open to those looking into this general profession. The following guidelines, however, will give you a solid understanding of the basic requirements for most long term care professionals in Georgia.

If you want to work as a nursing aide or general resident assistant, you can expect to need to enroll in a several month-long training program, that will deal with basic medical training specific to gerontology.  These training programs will ultimately require a supervised internship. Nursing aides in Georgia can test for certification from the American Red Cross upon completing their formal education.

Nurses specializing in long term care will still need to earn an associate’s or bachelor’s degree in nursing from an online or campus-based school, as well as complete a practicum and pass the NCLEX-RN exam. There are additional long-term care certifications possible, some employers may require them but at the moment Georgia only requires you hold a standard nursing certification.

Nursing home administrators and life care facility administrators will want to earn a bachelor’s or master’s degree in long term care administration. Curriculums for this area blend business and management, with the specifics of managing a nursing home, along with a general knowledge of gerontology. These individuals will need to an intensive 6-month AIT, or supervised internship, before they can test for a full working license from Georgia’s State Board of Nursing Home Administration.
