Certification Procedures for Georgia Personal Trainers

Though Georgia doesn’t currently regulate or license personal trainers, most are certified by courses and testing from one of numerous national organizations. Possibly the most widely recognized organization is the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM.) Other well-known agencies include the International Sports Sciences Association, the American Council on Exercise and the National Academy of Sports Medicine.

After completing an online program or campus-based Georgia personal trainer certification program, you have the option of testing with one of the several national certifying agencies.

Becoming a Certified Personal Trainer in Georgia

  1. Candidates in Georgia must be 18 years old or older and have graduated high school or achieved the equivalent diploma. Current CPR certification from a credible organization. For example, the American Heart Association and the American Red Cross each offers CPR certification.
  2.  Personal training certification candidates must be in good physical shape and be able to execute the same exercises they would advise for their patrons.
  3. Workshop attendance is advised, but not required. Depending on the level of education you’ve already received, one of two workshops should be attended—a one day workshop for veteran personal trainers or a comprehensive three day workshop for those new to the field. The one-day workshop costs about $130.00, while the three day workshop costs around $375.00. Also, expect to spend approximately $125.00 on textbooks.
  4. Pass a certified personal trainer national exam, which takes approximately two and a half hours and includes between 125 and 150 questions. The exam has a 71 percent “pass rate”—meaning that 29 percent of people must retest. The initial exam costs $279, while retesting (due to failure on the first test) costs $150. ACSM Alliance Members get a discount of $60.00 on their testing fees.  Other benefits include a complimentary subscription to the organization’s online and regular mail journals, a listing in the publically available membership index, special discounts for programs and continuing education classes, insurance and even product discounts.
