The state of Hawaii does not have any requirements for entry-level dental assistants. They do not need to register with the state nor obtain any sort of license. In Hawaii, dental assistant training is on-the-job typically. This training is under the direct supervision of licensed dentists. Dental assistants in Hawaii can also legally operate dental x-ray equipment and perform dental radiologic procedures without any additional training. For a complete list of functions permitted and not permitted by dental assistants in Hawaii contact the Dental Assisting National Board (www.danb.org). The Dental Assisting National Board (DANB) also offers a certification that is recognized and required in most states. Although it is not required in Hawaii, it will prove beneficial in providing necessary background education and give you an edge over dental assistants who are not certified. To become a dental assistant in Hawaii, it is advantageous to receive a certification.
