Find the right school for you
There are many different types of jobs included under the banner of long term care, but by following these steps, you’ll have a good understanding of some of the more basic requirements and types of long term care education in Hawaii you’ll require to get the job you want.
Nursing assistants, aides, and resident assistant staff generally undergo training programs lasting a few weeks or months. Their education focuses more on communication, how to effectively assist allied health professionals, and how to help fallen patients, bathe injured ones, and just contribute to a better and healthier quality of life for the individuals under their care. If desired, nursing assistants can get certified by the American Red Cross after they’ve been working for a few months.
Those entering the nursing field will need to earn either an associate’s or a bachelor’s degree from a nursing program. In Hawaii, this generally means moving to a big island, though you may be able to do the bulk of your education online if you can work out an appropriate internship. Areas of study typically include gerontology, physical therapy, pharmaceutical use and interaction, and nutrition. You can expect to be in school for three to five years, during which you’ll complete a substantial supervised internship. You’ll also need to take and successfully pass the NCLEX-RN before you can work, and though does the state doesn’t require it, some employers might be looking for applications with advanced certifications in long-term care.
Nursing home administrators need a bachelor’s degree to be considered for employment, or a master’s degree if they’re looking for promotional opportunities and more prestigious job openings. Classes deal with the general specifics of managing life care facilities, the societal and economic effects of aging, and also cover business topics such as budgeting and finance. A modest internship is required for licensure from the State Board of Hawaii, which is typically completed during your education.
