The State of Hawaii’s requisites for Massage Therapists (or MT’s) include the total number of course and practical training hours, along with specific course curricula offered by online schools or Hawaii Massage Therapy Schools. Professional licensing is mandatory and regulated by the Hawaii Department of Commerce and Consumer Affairs’ Professional and Vocational Licensing (PVL) Board. It is extremely important that massage therapy candidates choose from one of Hawaii’s massage therapy schools offering a program that will meet Hawaii’s current requirements. State regulations change from time to time, so aspiring MT’s should consult the Hawaii PVL’s website at http://hawaii.gov/dcca/pvl. Here are a few important notes about educational prerequisites for Hawaii massage therapy schools:

  • All formal massage therapy training provided by Hawaii massage therapy schools must be from an institution recognized by the state’s Department of Education, the University of Hawaii or other organization approved by Hawaii’s PVL Board. Examples of the latter include the American Massage Therapy Association (AMTA), the Rolf Institute of Structural Integration and the Commission of Massage Therapy Accreditation (COMTA).
  • Education and practical training received in states other than Hawaii must be from institutions accredited by an authorized government agency in that state, a recognized national accrediting institution such as the National Commission for Certifying Agencies (NCCA), or approved by the AMTA or Rolf Institute.
  • The classroom course requirements may be fulfilled through participation in a series of Hawaii’s Board of Massage Therapy approved workshops.
Through campus based and online programs, aspiring Massage Therapists in Honolulu, Kialua and Hilo, Hawaii may be able to prepare themselves for the possibility of employment in some of the largest hospitals and healthcare facilities in the state including Kuakini Medical Center, The Queen's Medical Center, and Hilo Medical Center.
