Hawaii Medical Billing and Coding Specialist Education

A typical certificate program offered through medical billing schools in Hawaii consists of 30-40 credits, which takes about 12 to 16 months to complete. Most programs focus specifically on building students' knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, medical billing, computer software, health care ethics, health care law, and other related topics. Certificate programs may require students to take two or three additional general education classes and an accounting or human resources class.

Associate's degree programs online or through Hawaii medical coding schools combine a major curriculum with general education courses. They normally take two to three years to complete, depending on how many classes students take each term. Associate's degree programs have the same focus as certificate courses, but some of them offer additional training in human resources management and accounting. These programs may also require students to complete an internship before they graduate, which can put them at an advantage over students with less education.

Medical Billing Specialists who join AHIMA and gain certification are required to participate in AHIMA's continuing education program, which requires Medical Billing Specialists to obtain 10-50 credits every time they renew. The number of credits needed is highly dependent on the applicant's certification level and the number of certifications they have. All certificants obtain credit through AHIMA-sponsored classes, seminars, meetings, symposiums, and gatherings; they also gain experience through volunteer and leadership opportunities that develop their understanding of health information management.

Through campus based and online programs, aspiring Medical Billing and Coding Professionals in Honolulu, Kialua and Hilo, Hawaii may be able to prepare themselves for the possibility of employment in some of the largest hospitals and healthcare facilities in the state including Kuakini Medical Center, The Queen's Medical Center, and Hilo Medical Center.
