Become a Personal Trainer in Hawaii - HI

Hawaii is a state in which fitness and recreation opportunities abound.  In addition to the temperate, tropical climate and the multitude of outdoor recreation opportunities, Hawaii also is home to a thriving tourist industry that includes hotels and resorts that routinely offer health club benefits.  Personal trainers in this environment have a wealth of opportunities.  In addition to the previously mentioned opportunities, the US Centers for Disease Control (CDC) reports that Hawaii is among the most active and least obese states.  Again, personal trainers serve a major role to a population that seems to value physical well being as much as the people of Hawaii do.

Personal trainers are professionals that work with clients to help the individuals achieve their fitness goals.  Methods may include assessment, cardiovascular training, resistance training, stretching, recreation, and lifestyle coaching to assist in achieving these goals.  A successful personal trainer is able to combine the science of exercise, the knowledge of different training methods, and the ability to coach and motivate.

The US Bureau of Labor and Statistics reports that, as of May 2008, there were 730 personal trainers working in Hawaii, or 0.06% of the population.  In addition, the outlook for the profession in Hawaii mirrors the outlook nationally.  The US Bureau of Labor and Statistics reports that the job outlook is very favorable for personal trainers, projecting jobs growth of 27% over the next decade.

How to Become a Personal Trainer in the State of Hawaii

Hawaii is a state in which the profession of personal training is not regulated.  This means that a license is not required by the state in order to practice, nor does one need to register as a personal trainer with the state.  In Hawaii, personal trainer certification involves completing an online program or attending a live-environment personal training certification program.

That being said, employers may require a national certification for the personal trainer.  Even if a national certification is not required, it may be beneficial for the personal trainer to obtain a national certification in order to increase his or her marketability, as well as to increase the knowledge base and effectiveness of their program.  There are several national organizations that offer certifications in personal training and other fitness related areas.  The most credible national certifying agencies are those certified by the NCCA, or the National Commission on Certifying Agencies.  The NCCA is an organization that ensures appropriate credentialing standards, including training, testing, and continued credentialing practices.

Although the profession of personal trainer is not specifically regulated by the state of Hawaii, health clubs and other fitness facilities that collect payment for membership are regulated by the state.  Consult the Hawaii Department of Commerce and Consumer Affairs for further information.
