Physical Therapy Assistant School in Hawaii
National demand for Physical Therapy Assistants (PTA) is growing every year, and the federal government predicts a 21% increase in PTA jobs in Hawaii in the ten years following 2006. Physical Therapy Assistants should not be confused with Physical Therapy Aides. Physical Therapy Assistants must have an Associate of Science degree, while Physical Therapy Aides don’t have this requirement and usually learn the trade through on-the-job experience.
The National Commission on Accreditation in Physical Therapy Education accredits many Physical Therapy Assistant programs throughout the United States, and there is just such a program in Hawaii.
Students of online or campus based Hawaii physical therapy assistant schools may earn an Associate of Science degree. These AS programs are comprised of two years of classroom instruction followed by an internship through which students gain hands-on experience and patient contact. Classes place a heavy emphasis on learning human anatomy and physiology, physics, math, electrotherapy, and kinesiology. The goal of Physical Therapy Assistant programs is typically to prepare students to implement therapeutic regimens
To be admitted to the program, students must have a high school diploma and show at least a ‘C’ grade earned in core science and math classes. With just one program in the state, there may be a competitive admissions process. Although prior physical therapy experience will put certain applicants at an advantage, it is not required for admission to the program.
Through campus based and online programs, aspiring Physical Therapy Assistants in Honolulu, Kialua and Hilo, Hawaii may be able to prepare themselves for the possibility of employment in some of the largest hospitals and healthcare facilities in the state including Kuakini Medical Center, The Queen's Medical Center, and Hilo Medical Center.References and Links:
