The profession of health education is a broad, complex field involving a variety of settings. Health educators work in universities, as instructors or researchers; in a clinical setting, training other health professionals; in a patient setting, training patients and loved ones in dealing with health issues and procedures; and in the community setting, teaching the public about health prevention measures. Receiving a health education degree in Alaska is the first step towards eligibility in working in that state as a health educator.

Alaska requires a minimum of a bachelor degree in health education or equivalent academic training for its Health Educator I position. Health education schools in Alaska may be found at both brick-and-mortar institutions and online. Many programs require prerequisites for admission to a bachelor program in health education, including a certain grade point average and having taken coursework in science and mathematics. Courses one could expect to take in a health education program include medical technology, medical terminology, human relations, anatomy and physiology, testing and evaluation procedures,   and laboratory organization and management. The majority of health education schools also require a semester-long internship, in which you receive special training and practice in teaching others. In addition, the government of Alaska recommends certification through the National Commission for Health Education Credentialing, Inc. Graduate opportunities are available as well, once you have received your bachelor degree. For those with masters’ degrees and above, Health Educator II and supervisory positions are offered in Alaska.
