Oklahoma is a diverse state with both metropolitan and vast rural areas. Today, over 55 Native American tribes call Oklahoma home, making Oklahoma the state with the largest Native American population, according to statemaster.com. This diversity makes health care and health education a significant factor in the well-being of all of the citizens of Oklahoma. Health educators work for public health education and health promotion within communities, schools, health care facilities, businesses, and public and private agencies. Topics of particular concern in Oklahoma and which have been targeted by the Oklahoma Public Health Association include diabetes, heart disease, the use of antibiotics, influenza, gerontological health, emergency response and preparedness, stroke, and sun safety.
Those interested in a health education career first need a health education degree in Oklahoma, at minimum a bachelor degree. This four-year program will typically offer a concentration from 24 to 40 hours in health and health education/health prevention coursework, and usually will also include a practicum giving students real-world work experience in health education. If you are interested in more advanced positions in health education or in management positions, you should pursue a master or doctoral degree. Some governmental positions in health education also require graduate degrees.
