Health information management (HIM) schools in New Jersey prepare students with knowledge that develops an array of abilities that are necessary for successful careers.  Beyond the application of technological know-how, RHIAs must possess effective communication skills, understand aspects of clinical medicine, use empirical evidence to solve problems and uphold the highest of ethical standards.

HIM programs in New Jersey integrate didactic, laboratory and clinical experiences so that graduates are well prepared to enter the profession.  For example, students deepen their knowledge of the discipline through classes such as:

  • Medical Terminology, which addresses word formations, derivations and meanings within health related fields;
  • Development and Retention of Medical Records, which explores the structure and content as well as the retention and storage of health records in care settings;
  • Health Care Financing and Budgeting, which provides an overview of the subject matter for non-finance and non-accounting majors; and
  • Legal Aspects of Health Information, which considers medical records as legal documents as well as the reviews the legal aspects of hospital and medical staff organization.

New Jersey students must maintain at least a 2.75 grade point average in the program.  After completing their HIM degrees, graduates can sit for the RHIA credentialing examination administered by the American Health Information Management Association.

In addition to HIM classes, students must also successfully complete general education requirements in subject areas such as science and mathematics, social sciences and humanities.
