Obtaining a health information management degree in Illinois will allow you to follow an interesting, exciting, and challenging career path. Health informatics is a relatively new discipline that combines computer technology, information technology, and health care so that medical information can be accessed and used most effectively and efficiently. Health informatics looks comprehensively at ways that medical information, including personal data for patients, diagnostic methods, and pharmaceutical treatments, can be input and accessed such that it assures the most effective and efficient patient care. Information that a physician needs in order to best treat the patient is literally keystrokes away.

A career in health informatics is an excellent option for those who are adept at working with computers and information technology and who also have a desire to work in the health care field without actually being a physician, nurse, pharmacist, or other health professional. Although there is not currently a licensing or certification requirement for health informatics professionals, the American Medical Informatics Association (AMIA; www.amia.org) is a professional association that provides information, research, and education to serve the medical community, policymakers, and the general public.  AMIA is currently in the process of developing a certification process. Students can decide on their career path and choose among various educational levels and degrees in health informatics. Obtaining a bachelor’s degree will prepare you for an entry-level position; a master’s degree is appropriate for Illinois graduates who want to go into management or research.
