The field of health information management combines medical aspects and information technology. Its main concern is the safety, security and accuracy of electronic medical records. Health informatics refers to the practice of medical data analysis performed by health information administrators, and is effectively the next step above health information technicians. The health informatics degree in Massachusetts that you must have to get into the field is a bachelor degree. In addition, certification is also required by most Massachusetts employers to become a RHIA (Registered Health Information Administrator).

One can obtain a bachelor degree in health informatics either online or through a number of schools in Massachusetts. If you already possess an associate degree in health information technology (i.e., if you have already worked as a health information technician), you are eligible for a certificate program at some schools that will add health information administration to your educational background. After completing your college program, you will be eligible to sit for the RHIA exam offered by the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA). Once you pass the exam and meet the qualifications, you will be an RHIA, eligible for jobs where you manage patient health information and medical records, administer computer information systems, collect and analyze patient data, and use classification systems and medical terminologies. As an administrator, you will also manage people and operational units and be able to interact with personnel at all levels from different parts of your medical organization.
