Health information management has become important all across the United States, but perhaps even more so in outlying rural areas. One state that has a large rural population is Minnesota, which is why the Minnesota Health Information Management Association (MHiMA) has a Rural Health Resource Center to target these areas. Health informatics is big business in Minnesota, and medical informatics training has become a major discipline.

The minimum health informatics degree in Minnesota that one needs to work in health information management is a bachelor degree. Some students might already have an associate degree in the field, and they may opt to pursue a certificate program that will give them administrator status. After attending one of the online or campus based health informatics schools in Minnesota, it is recommended by most state employers and colleges that you take a certification exam offered by the AHIMA (American Health Information Management Association). This certification is RHIA (Registered Health Information Administrator) and denotes to potential employers that you hold your work to a higher standard of quality than a non-certified applicant would. Some of the job titles within the health informatics field in Minnesota that you will be eligible for after graduation include Practice Workflow and Information Management Redesign Specialist, Clinician/Practitioner Consultant, Implementation Support Specialist and EHR Trainer.
