A health information management degree in informatics incorporates several disciplines:  Health care, computer science and information science, which involves collecting, classifying and analyzing data.

A minimum of a 2.5 GPA is required for incoming students who will take common liberal arts electives such as English literature, as well as courses covering health law and ethics, and the principles of disease research and reporting.

A health informatics degree program typically features coursework that covers introductory and intermediate classes in anatomy, physiology, pathology, pharmaceuticals and medical terminology. In addition, information technology classes will give students a knowledgebase of systems design, as well as a of survey common information systems used in health information management. Students will also be expected to complete courses in management training, including supervising employees, budgeting, and communication and leadership skills.

Health Informatics and Health Information Administration graduates in North Carolina are eligible to take the national certification examination to earn the Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA) credential.
