In response to the growing need for Health Information Administrator (HIA) training to provide highly skilled workers to electronically manage the acquisition, storage, retrieval and utilization of clinical, administrative and financial information in health care data, Ohio has both campus-based and online health informatics schools available that will provide the skills necessary for success as a health information administrator.

Coursework leading to a graduate degree in health informatics typically will include classes in health records management systems; leadership and policy; issues in allied health; managerial leadership in allied health professions and evidence base practice.  Students in Ohio must complete six credit hours of research courses, including courses in research design or methodology and in data analysis (either statistical or qualitative). Other courses cover analysis and design of management information systems; decision support and expert systems and business data communications.  Classes include corporate information systems planning and management; systems analysis and design; management of corporate data resources and emerging technologies.

Students successfully completing the Health Informatics degree are eligible to sit for the certification examination offered by the American Health Information Management Association by attending a program accredited through the Commission on Accreditation for Health Informatics and Information Management Education.
