Health information administrators (HIA) manage health information systems in medical offices and facilities. This responsibility includes knowledge of the medical, legal and ethical principles involved. Combining health care and business administration, obtaining a health information management degree in South Dakota is the best way to get your start in the HIA or HIM (health information management) field.

Most health informatics schools in South Dakota offer HIA programs that are four years long and result in a bachelor degree in health information administration or healthcare informatics. For students who have already received an associate degree in health information technology, however, a certificate option might be presented which would allow them to study for just one to two more years to get their HIA credentials. South Dakota was one of the first states to have its own health information association, the South Dakota Health Information Management Association (SDHIMA). This association is more than 60 years old and was begun as the South Dakota Chapter of the American Association of Medical Record Librarians. The name was changed to its current form (SDHIMA) in 1992 in response to changes in the medical records system. Today, this organization has grown to incorporate electronic medical records of South Dakotans as well as traditional paper ones.
