The state of Utah does not yet regulate any educational requirements to practice health informatics, or health information administration, nor does the government restrict these professionals by insisting on certification, registration, or occupational licensure. However, most employers will not consider hiring any health information administrators (HIAs), sometimes called health information mangers (HIMs), without some level of formal education in health informatics. In fact, so many HIAs hold at least a bachelor degree that it is quickly becoming a professional standard.

Furthermore, only those that earn a bachelor degree in HIA or HIM can become eligible to sit for the written examination administered by the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) that will result in certification. Certified HIAs may then operate under the professional title of “registered health information administrator” or RHIA. As stated, certification is entirely done on a voluntary basis, but RHIAs are much more likely to secure long-lasting careers and higher salaries than HIAs.

Students that are determined to complete a health informatics degree in Utah will find their choices a bit limited.  Universities offer students the opportunity to earn a Bachelor of Science in Health Administrative Services—Health Information Management Degree (120 credits) through distance learning. This same university also has a Health Information Management Institutional Certificate (30 credits) program available.
