According to a 2009 report by the West Virginia Health Improvement Institute, West Virginia continues to rank among the bottom ten states in the nation in the overall health status of its citizens. However, some of the state’s physicians rank among the top one percent of doctors in the country. These facts are helping to spur West Virginia’s Health Information Technology Statewide Strategic Plan, designed to bring the state’s medical records up to date and make them electronically accessible to all.

Students who are interested in becoming a part of this ambitious effort should pursue a health informatics degree in West Virginia. This would allow them to work as HIA (Health Information Administrators) in the HIM (Health Information Management) field, which is concerned with the safety, security and effectiveness of electronic medical records. It is believed by many in the medical field in West Virginia that, through making this plan a priority, it will be possible to make West Virginia one of the healthiest states in the nation rather than one of its least healthy. A degree plus optional certificate in health information administration will open the doors to many positions throughout West Virginia with names like Health Information Management Consultant, Database Coordination, Health Information Services Administrator, and Director of Health Information Administration and Management.
