Program:

Health information technicians in the District of Columbia are required to have at least 2 years of college study in health information technology. This would be an associate degree program, and you can attend either full-time or part-time. Attending full-time, however, may help you to complete the program in as little as 18 months.

The other degree plan is the 4-year bachelor degree. This option is intended for students that want to become health information administrators, so it is not really meant for entry-level work, but it is a good option to consider if you decide to advance your career in the future.

No matter which degree program you choose, you will be taking some of these classes:

  • Data Analysis for Clinical Decision Making
  • Medical Terminology
  • Electronic Health Records
  • Pharmacology
  • Health Information Systems Analysis

After graduating, you can then begin pursuing RHIT certification in the District of Columbia. This is available from the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA), which offers the Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) credential.

Through the completion of online and campus-based studies, future health information technicians in Washington, DC will be able to pursue dynamic careers in the district’s most well-known medical facilities, including George Washington University Medical Center.
