Acquiring certification as a Registered Health Information Technician basically consists of completing a properly accredited degree program followed by successfully passing a credentialing exam. RHIT certification in Georgia doesn't differ from the norm. Students in the state must complete an associates' degree accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Health Informatics and Information Management Education (CAHIIM), as well as pass an exam administered by the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA). While RHIT certification isn't strictly necessary in order to break into the HIT field, it's certainly favored by potential employers and is considered the standard foundation on which to build a successful career in the industry.
Georgia is home to eight different colleges and universities that offer CAHIIM accredited HIT degree programs. Students in the state can either enroll in a local institution in order to complete the appropriate degree, or may choose to take advantage of distance learning opportunities. Distance education boasts a broadened selection of programs and a level of increased flexibility that attracts many rising health information technicians. According to a recent report compiled by the National Center for Education Statistics, around two-thirds of the nations' higher learning institutions offer on-line courses in order to meet the needs of a diversifying student body.
