The Maryland Health Information Management Association (MdHIMA) recommends that health information management technicians become certified. Although Maryland does not formally require certification, more employers within the state of Maryland are apt to hire RHITs (Registered Health Information Technicians) over HITs. Getting your health information technology degree, however, is the first step to working in the field. You must have at least an associate degree. Colleges and universities across Maryland offer this degree. In order to become certified after graduation, the college program you choose should be certified by the Commission on Accreditation for Health Informatics and Information Management Education (CAHIIM). Courses in most health information technology programs include Fundamentals of Health Information, Medical Terminology, Statistics, Business Communications, Disease Processes, Psychology, and a clinical practicum, where you will put to practical use the skills and knowledge you have learned in the classroom, in a real-life work setting. After graduation, you may pursue RHIT certification in Maryland by taking an exam offered by the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA). If you are interested in HIT administrative positions, you can opt for a bachelor degree and take the RHIA (Registered Health Information Administrator) certification exam instead.
