Working in the field of health care information technology in Michigan requires an associate health information technology degree. Beyond that, professional certification is optional, but recommended by the Michigan Health Information Network and other professional organizations for people working in the field. RHIT certification in Michigan shows employers that you have a certain standard of quality to your work and puts you ahead of other non-certified job applicants. Courses you will take in college training programs for health information technology may include titles such as Health Management Information Systems, Terminology in Health Care and Public Health Settings, Introduction to Information and Computer Systems, Quality Improvement, Usability and Human Factors and Fundamentals of Health Workflow Process Analysis and Redesign. Once you graduate from your college program, you are qualified to take the RHIT certification exam. RHIT certification is under the jurisdiction of the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA). Jobs for RHIT certified individuals are more plentiful in Michigan than they are for those who are not certified.
