Find the right school for you
As in any allied health field, training is crucial to becoming a health information technician (HIT) in Minnesota. Jobs under this domain call for at least an associate HIT degree. These types of programs can be found online and in traditional colleges and universities. Courses that can be found in the majority of health information technology education programs include Introduction to Health Information Management, Basic ICD-9-CM Coding, and Quality Analysis and Management. In addition, some programs require students to complete field practicums at Minnesota medical facilities and centers, such as Hennepin County Health Department in Minneapolis, Lakeview Hospital in Stillwater and HealthEast in South Saint Paul. Here, students are able to make practical use of the skills and didactic theories they have learned in their classes. Certification is not yet ordered by Minnesota’s state government for health information technicians, but many say it is quickly coming. RHIT certification in Minnesota is possible after graduating with your associate degree. Administered by the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA), RHIT (Registered Health Information Technician) certification consists of passing an examination given by AHIMA. Many employers view RHIT certification as a standard of quality, showing that you have an edge over other non-certified applicants for the same positions.
