Now that you have made the decision to pursue a career in health information technology, the next thing you need to do is choose your degree program. You do have a couple of options here, but you need to consider your career goals before you make this decision.

In Montana, most new health information technicians begin their education with a 2-year associate degree. Sometimes this degree can be completed in as little as 18 months if you attend on a full-time basis. The other option is the 4-year bachelor degree. The bachelor degree is not needed for entry-level work, but it is most certainly needed for advancement, so you should be aware of the benefits of that option.

To give you an idea of the coursework that you will be studying, take a look at the list below:

  • Utilization, Risk, and Compliance Management
  • Healthcare Statistics
  • Anatomy and Physiology
  • Drug Terminology
  • Advanced Coding

Because EHR platforms promise to be the technology of the future, it is likely that some of your education will be directed towards this initiative.

After completing your schooling, you can then apply to test for certification. By successfully passing this examination, the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) will give you the title of Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT).

Both online and campus-based programs can prepare future health information technicians in Billings, Missoula, Great Falls, Butte, Bozeman, and Helena, Montana for integral careers in the largest healthcare facilities in the state, including Bozeman Deaconess Hospital, Kalispell Regional Medical Center, Northern Montana Hospital, and St. Patrick Hospital and Health Sciences Center.
