Health Information Technology Certification in New Jersey - NJ

Registered health information technician (RHIT) certification in New Jersey is a matter of completing an associate’s degree from an accredited institution and then becoming certified by passing a national exam. A health information technology degree includes courses in medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, fundamentals of computing, data security, principles of health care operations, medical billing, and quality care topics. Most programs in New Jersey also include a significant number of clinical practice hours. Health information technicians need a basic understanding of medical vocabulary and clinical terms, so their coursework in medical topics is not nearly as in-depth as that for other health care workers. It is one occupation that is vital to the medical field that does not require the extent and depth of education and practical experience as others in the field.

The American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) administers a certification exam that consists of 150 multiple choice questions. The exam covers topics such as health data management, health statistics, quality management, data security, and information technology. Ongoing education is very important in this field because technology changes very rapidly. In addition, governmental regulations and laws are constantly being introduced or updated in order to preserve patient privacy. A registered health information technician in New Jersey typically needs to earn 20 continuing education units in a two-year period.
