The Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) certification credential can open many doors for employment in North Carolina’s hospitals, healthcare facilities and research centers, physician practices, mental health facilities, public health agencies and many other settings.   Requirements for the Health Information Technology Certification are determined by the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA). Academics:  Applicants must successfully complete a course of study and attain an associate's degree from a Health Information Management (HIM) program accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Health Informatics and Information Management Education (CAHIIM). Students who are currently enrolled in school in their final semester may apply to take the examination. Examination:  An application to take the certification examination should be submitted, along with a check for $229 for AHIMA members or $299 for non-members to: Attn: RHIA/RHIT Exams, AHIMA, Dept. 77-3081, Chicago, IL 60678-3081. Applicants may also register online. After receiving notification that the applicant is eligible to take the examination, arrangements should be made with Prometric, the testing service that will administer the examination. During 2009, 82.7 percent of applicants in North Carolina who took the RHIT certification examination passed the first time that they took the test. However, candidates who did not pass the examination upon the first try may retake the test after waiting a period of 45 days.
