As healthcare providers implement processes and technologies to migrate from paper-based to electronic health records, a health information technology certification is a way to demonstrate expertise and competency. Through a federal grant, Oklahoma offers a six month HITECH Workforce Training Program that awards a Health Information Technology certification to those who successfully complete the coursework.  Oklahoma also has colleges and technical schools that are accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Health Informatics and Information Management Education (CAHIIM) and whose graduates that receive an Associate Degree in Health Information Technology are eligible to sit for the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) national certification examination. Those that successfully pass the examination are certified as a Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT). The RHIT certification examination tests knowledge of areas such as healthcare data management, including health data structure, content and standards; health services organization and delivery; legal issues and healthcare compliance, confidentiality and privacy issues; data storage; quality management; health statistics; coding practices and knowledge of information technology and systems. The examination itself consists of 150 multiple-choice questions and the time limit to complete is 3 1/2 hours.  The current passing scale score for the RHIT examination is 300 out 400.
