Health Information Technology Certification in Pennsylvania - PA

RHIT certification in Pennsylvania is open to those who have an associates level degree from a program accredited through the Commission for Accreditation for Health Informatics and Information Management Education (CAHIIM) and who have passed an exam administered through AHIMA. The exam may be taken during the last semester, and requires a scaled score of 300 out of 400. Health information technology careers are a good match for those who are analytical and organized, who enjoy mastering new technology and who take pride in making systems work efficiently. Although they do not work directly with medical patients, health information technicians should have strong communication abilities as well as computer literacy skills. There are a number of accredited HIT programs open to those in Pittsburgh and other Pennsylvania communities. Some are online, while some are housed at traditional community colleges or technical institutes. Those enrolling in a health information technology program in Pennsylvania should expect the following concepts to be covered in their classes:

  • basic physiology
  • medical terminology
  • issues in reimbursement
  • diagnostic coding
Ultimately the future health technology specialists of Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Erie, and Allentown will be able to pursue careers as medical records managers, coders, and health information technicians.
