Most health information technology degrees in Texas can be earned through technical institutes, career training schools, and junior and community colleges. These HIT degree programs will take between eighteen to twenty months to complete and end with a clinical internship or practical training segment. Even though HITs are among the only health care professionals that do not directly participate in patient care, they do work in health care facilities. Therefore, many HIT programs will require students to undergo drug screening, criminal background checks, and certain immunizations before gaining admission.

When selecting an education program, students are encouraged to seek one that will qualify them to take an examination by Commission on Certification for Health Informatics and Information Management (CCHIIM). Those that successfully pass examination will be granted registered health information technician (RHIT) certification in Texas. Although certification is optional, it is commonly a determining factor when employers are considering candidates for hire. There are currently over twenty-five different HIT programs that are accredited by the Accreditation for Health Informatics and Information Management Education (CAHIIM). By graduating from one these programs, students can earn an Associate of Applied Science in Health Information Management or an Associate of Applied Science in Health Information Technology. Students can expect the required curriculum for these programs to involve courses such as: Computers in Health Care, Pharmacology, Coding and Classification Systems, Quality Assessment and Performance Improvement, Health Information Organization and Supervision, Health Data Content and Structure.
