Although there are no legal guideline regarding educational requirements for HITs, job prospects are especially good for those with a health information technology degree. Right now there is a state college in Ogden that offers the following HIT programs: Bachelor of Science in Health Administrative Services—Health Information Management (124-125 credits), Associate of Applied Science in Health Information Technology (64-66 credits), Health Care Coding and Classification Institutional Certificate (24 credits). Course schedules for these programs will include classes like the Introduction to Health Information Systems, Diagnosis Coding, Microcomputer Applications, Introduction to Pathophysiology, and Health Care Marketing. Although this is the only HIT-specific degree program provider in Utah, there is a community college in Salt Lake City that offers a non-degree health information specialist program as well. Students looking for more HIT program diversity and flexibility should consider online and distance learning schools.

Students that have successfully completed an HIT education program and want to gain registered health information technician or RHIT certification in Utah should contact the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) and obtain a “Registered Health Information Technician” examination application. After submitting a completed application and $299 payment to the AHIMA, qualified candidates will be approved to take a RHIT examination. If passed, RHIT certification is awarded. To maintain certification, RHITs must earn twenty continuing education units every two years by engaging in occupation enhancing activities like: audio seminars and webinars, e-Learning and e-Assessments, conferences and events, and online quizzes.
