Settings include hospitals, outpatient clinics, ambulatory care facilities, skilled nursing facilities, rehabilitation hospitals, home care agencies, physician practices, outpatient surgeries, medical equipment companies, research organizations, pharmaceutical companies, insurance providers, government agencies, data management companies and colleges or universities. Some individuals work from home handling medical billing or coding. Larger agencies often delineate responsibilities between record handling, data management and medical billing and seek professionals with specialty credentials or experience in these specific areas. Smaller physician practices or outpatient centers may seek individuals with broader knowledge to handle more aspects of the health information aspects of medical practice.
How are health information technology jobs helping with the transition to electronic health records?
Medical records are in transition across the nation from paper to electronic. Research shows that records are better maintained, better stored and more secure when kept electronically, and incentive programs have been implemented through the Medicare and Medicaid programs to encourage providers to adopt EHR (electronic health records).
