Becoming a Dentist in British Columbia - BC

Dentistry is regulated in Canada by each individual province, just as the practice of dentistry is regulated in the United States on a state-by-state basis. In order to be able to practice within a province, you must be licensed in that province. Students who wish to learn how to become a dentist in British Columbia should know that dentists who have a career in British Columbia must be registered with the College of Dental Surgeons of British Columbia (BC). One must complete training and graduate from a general dental school accredited in Canada or the United States. Then, one must pass the examination given by the National Dental Examining Board of Canada (NDEB).

When submitting an application to become a registered dentist in British Columbia, one must also submit information for a criminal history check, a statutory declaration, letters from any other previous jurisdictions in which you were licensed to practice dentistry, the application form and any applicable fees, a demonstration of your proficiency in the English language, and evidence of liability insurance.  All of these items are required for full registration as a dentist in British Columbia. There are nine other classes of dentists in BC, each of which may have different requirements: Restricted to Specialty; Academic; Academic (grandparented); Limited (education, research and volunteer); Limited (armed services or government); Limited (post graduate); Limited (student practitioner); Temporary; and Non-Practicing.
