As of yet, the state of Missouri does not regulate the nutritionist profession. Therefore, both health care professionals and students alike can become a nutritionist in Missouri by simply gaining basic education and training in relevant aspects of nutrition. After successfully earning a high school diploma or GED, those interested in a career in nutrition should enroll a program of higher education with a major in nutrition, or related field. Although there are formal educational requirements to practice as a nutritionist in the state, the Missouri Department of Economic Development Division of Workforce Development has found that approximately 70% of all employed nutritionists hold a bachelor degree or advanced degree.
However, classroom-based education should be supplemented by hands-on practical training. Many times, nutrition degree programs in Missouri will include a practicum or internship component as part of the required curriculum. If not, students should seek out other training opportunities through local nutrition associations, hospitals, and vocational training institutes. Paid work positions, job shadowing, and volunteer activities may also provide training options for students. Hands-on training should occur under the supervision of a licensed professional (nutritionist/dietitian/nutrition educator) in a controlled environment where nutritionists typically work (community health clinics, government health departments, university cafeterias, etc.). Nutritionist students in Kansas City, St. Louis, Springfield, and Independence may find both training and job opportunities through local area hospital and medical centers such as St. John’s Mercy Medical Center, St. Anthony’s Medical Center, Barnes Jewish Hospital, and Missouri Baptist Medical Center.
