The United States Bureau of Labor Statistics anticipates that both nutritionists and dietitians will continue to rise in demand as a result of growing aging populations, advances in medical research, and professionals leaving the field. As a result, between 2008 and 2018, nutritionists can look forward to a 9% employment growth which will create an estimated 5,600 new job openings across the country. This industry trend will affect nutritionists in Montana by increasing job availability locally as well.
In order to become a nutritionist in Montana, professionals must first graduate from a baccalaureate and master’s degree program or doctorate degree program in dietetics, food and nutrition, or public health nutrition from an accredited college or university. However, those that do not hold these advanced degrees in nutrition must contact the Montana Board of Medical Examiners and apply for a nutritionist license to legally practice in the state. Before applying for a license, nutritionists must complete eligibility requirements by being currently registered by the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR) and completing dietetics, food and nutrition, or public health program from an accredited college or university. The initial application fee for a nutritionist license is $58.50. Presently, there are approximately 200 nutritionists actively employed throughout Montana.
