Pediatric Nursing Jobs in Massachusetts - MA

Under Massachusetts law, pediatric nurse practitioners must be licensed advanced practice registered nurses (APRNs). Because the pediatric nurse practitioner job description goes far beyond that of an RN, this type of career requires more specialized clinical training and education. There are certain mandates of the Commonwealth for PNPs. Registered nurses who want to know how to become pediatric nurses in Massachusetts should pursue graduate training at the master’s or doctoral level.

After completing graduate school, prospective pediatric nurse practitioners must take an examination to become licensed and receive national certification as a PNP. This must be done through an organization recognized by the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Nursing, such as the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners. Before starting a career as a PNP and practicing in Massachusetts, prospective PNPs must apply to the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Nursing to receive authorization to work as an Advanced Practice RN.

Every PNP must also have on file with the Board written practice guidelines and prescriptive guidelines developed in conjunction with a physician. Any PNP in Massachusetts who has prescriptive authority must also complete ongoing continuing education in pain management, identification of at-risk patients in terms of substance abuse, and counseling patients about medications.
