Becoming a Phlebotomist in California – CA

This profession requires accuracy and great attention to detail along with the ability to adhere to very strict standards and procedures to be successful. Excellent communication skills, good analytical judgment and the ability to work under pressure are necessary personal attributes.


To become a phlebotomist in California the following steps must be taken:

  1. Investigate the basic requirements of this field to determine if it fits your career goals.
  2. Attain a high school diploma or GED, and, preferably, an Associate degree.
  3. Complete an accredited phlebotomy training program.
  4. Pass a written exam given by an approved training program.
  5. Submit an application form for state certification with the required documents and $54 fee to the CA State Dept. of Health Services – Laboratory Field Services, Phlebotomy Program to obtain a state certificate.
  6. Seek a position as a phlebotomist in the state of California.
  7. Obtain at least 3 continuing education hours (CE) per year (6 CE total hours per renewal) to submit for each two-year renewal of your certificate.

Training can vary in length from 6-12 weeks to several months or a year or more. Programs approved by The National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences (NAACLS) are held in the highest regard because of their high standards and thoroughness in training. This training can be accomplished through online courses or courses at community and state colleges. According to a Bureau of Labor Statistics industry profile, hospitals employ the majority of phlebotomy hires. After hospitals, medical/diagnostic laboratories and physician’s offices are next in the number of hires.
