Becoming a Physical Therapist in Wyoming – WY

The education requirements for becoming a physical therapist in Wyoming are quite stringent.  The first requirement is a Bachelor of Arts degree from an approved university.  The degree itself is not important as long as it includes the mathematics and science courses that are needed to enter into a physical therapy program.  Some students choose undergraduate degrees in physical education, biology or social sciences.   The important thing is to keep your GPA as high as possible.  Most physical therapy graduate schools require a GPA of at least a 3.0 for acceptance into the program.  During the time that you are completing your undergraduate work, it is a good idea to volunteer or get a job working in the physical therapy department of a hospital or clinic.  Physical therapy graduate schools require that kind of experience before you enter the program.

How to Become a Physical Therapist in Wyoming

Upon completion of an acceptable Bachelor of Arts degree, the student can apply to an APTA accredited physical therapy program.  These programs are from two to three and one-half years in length.  The Masters Degree in Physical Therapy includes coursework in more science and subjects that deal specifically to physical therapy.  During that time students will get clinical experience by working under the supervision of a licensed physical therapist in a physical therapy facility.

Once the person receives his Masters degree in Physical Therapy, he must take and pass the National Physical Therapy Examination or the NPTE.  These are the steps to take.

  • Get all of the registration materials you need from the licensing authority in your jurisdiction.
  • Return the materials and your payment to the place the licensing authority assigned you.
  • When everything has been approved the licensing authority will notify FSBPT that you can take your test.
  • FSBPT will send you a letter with permission to schedule the test time with Prometric.
  • Schedule your test at www.prometric.com
  • Take the test on the day you scheduled

Wyoming’s educational department is authorized to issue a temporary permit to students who are qualified to take the NPTE.  It will allow them to work under a licensed therapist while they are waiting to take their test.  The permit is good for six months, but it can be renewed if necessary.  Each permit and renewal costs $70.00.
