Becoming a Physician Assistant in Indiana

Physician Assistant Certification and License in Indiana

Physician assistants can expect a high growth rate through 2016 with the national average growth expected to be 27%.  The state of Indiana is on target with the national rate, with a matching rate of 27%.

Certification by the American Academy of Physician Assistants (AAPA) should be completed in order to practice in the state of Indiana.  This is important to note for anybody interested in knowing how to become a physician assistant in Indiana.  Physician assistants from all of the United States are represented in the entire scope of medicine by the AAPA .  Graduation from an accredited physician assistant program is a requirement of the AAPA.  The Physician Assistant National Certifying Examination (PANCE) exam may be taken upon graduation from the program.  Certification requires passing a multiple-choice exam with 360 questions testing comprehension of basic medical knowledge. The fee for the exam is $475 and must accompany the exam application.  There are over 200 available testing sites in which the exam can be scheduled. Certification must be renewed every two years.  

Those wishing to apply for physician assistant licensing in order to become a physician assistant in Indiana can find applications at http://www.in.gov/icpr/webfile/formsdiv/09237.pdf.  Applications must be completed and signed by both the applicant and the supervising physician. 

The initial application fee is $100.  Licenses expire on July 1st of odd numbered years, and there is a $50 renewal fee.  In addition to the application, the following documents must be provided:

  • A passport type photo taken within 8 weeks of applying
  • An official transcript from the school where the physician assistant program was completed.
  • Certified copy of applicants diploma
  • Examination score report from the NCCPA exam
  • Notarized copy of current NCCPA certification
