Becoming a Physician Assistant in North Dakota

Students who want to know how to become a physician assistant in North Dakota, should be aware that they will be entering a Physician Assistant program to attain a baccalaureate or master’s degree, preferably a master’s degree. A BS or BA degree in a health-related field is preferred before entering the master’s degree program. Prerequisites vary according to each program, but most require previous health care experience, and a minimum GPA, of 2.75 or higher. This is a must in order to secure one of the available physician assistant jobs in North Dakota.
Suggested studies before entering a PA program include anatomy, biology, chemistry, algebra, computer science, psychology, medical terminology, nutrition, physiology, social science, English and statistics. The minimum grade of B for courses in anatomy, physiology and pharmacology is required.
After graduating, a student must pass the National Board Exam for Physician Assistants given by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA) in order to become a physician assistant in North Dakota.
The state of North Dakota mandates that physician assistants must be licensed in to practice. The North Dakota State Board of Medical Examiners has the following licensure requirements for Physician Assistants:
- Pass the certifying examination administered by of the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA).
- Provide evidence of current “good standing” with the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants.
- Secure a contract agreeing to offer patient services under a doctor currently practicing in North Dakota. Adhere to standards of professional conduct.

Those who wish to become a physician assistant in North Dakota should note that an applicant might be required to appear in person before the Board of Medical Examiners for an interview. According to the North Dakota State Board of Medical Examiners, national criminal background checks, including fingerprinting, are now required of all new applicants for medical licensure.
