Mental Health Nurse Practitioner Jobs in California - CA

There is more to becoming a psychiatric nurse practitioner in California than just attending graduate school. Registered nurses with an undergraduate degree who are interested in learning how to become psychiatric nurse practitioners in California are encouraged to apply to PMHNP programs. These graduate programs will result in a master’s degree, doctoral degree, or post-master’s certificate, depending upon the program chosen. After graduation, the state of California mandates that all psychiatric nurse practitioners become nationally certified. The most common certification agency for PMHNPs is the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC). Certifications available through examination with the ANCC include Adult Psychiatric and Mental Health Nurse Practitioner and Family Psychiatric and Mental Health Nurse Practitioner.

Once certified, one must apply to the State of California’s Board of Nursing prior to being authorized to practice as a PMHNP in the state. All supporting documents, transcripts, examination scores and certification status and the like must be mailed to the Advanced Practice Unit – NP Certification, Board of Registered Nursing, P.O. Box 944210, Sacramento, CA 94244-2100. Some information must be sent directly from the educational institution or facility and not from the applicant, so make sure to check into this before applying. You may legally practice as a PMHNP in California once you have received your license from the state.
